Console Building Guide for Oninoshima: Controller Settings, Piece Control & High Ground Retakes
The Settings That Actually Matter
First, Builder Pro is non-negotiable. If you're still using Combat Pro, stop reading and go change it right now.
For Edit Hold Time, drop it to 0.100–0.120s. Any higher and you'll get stuck in edit mode mid-fight; any lower and you'll accidentally edit your own floor. Look Sensitivity at 45–50% (linear curve, 0% boost) gives you that snappy aim without overshooting. Build Mode Sensitivity should be 1.5x–2.0x your look sens—you need that extra speed for 90s on controller.
Disable "Reset Build Choice" in settings. This keeps your last selected piece between builds instead of defaulting back to wall every time. It sounds small but saves half a second on every retake.
Two Techniques You Need In Your Arsenal
The "Oninoshima Window Peek" (Piece Control)
Button sequence: R2 (wall) → R1 (ramp) → O (jump) → R2 (floor) → L2 (edit).
You're boxing yourself in a 1x1, then editing the wall's bottom two panels to create a shooting window. On controller, this is the fundamental piece control move. You place four pieces in sequence, then edit the wall you're facing to take a shot. The rhythm is: place, place, jump, place, edit. Practice until you can do it without looking at your build menu.
The "Cone Jump Retake" (High Ground)
Button sequence: L1 (cone) → R2 (wall) → O (jump) → R2 (floor) → R1 (ramp).
You're throwing a cone above the enemy to block their vision, walling to protect yourself, then floor+ramping to take height. This retake works especially well on console because you're relying on fast piece placement rather than fast edits—and controller piece placement is actually faster than KBM once you develop muscle memory.
How to Practice in Creative Mode
Hop into BHE 1v1 Build Fights (code: 8064-7152-2934). Set matchmaking to "controller only" so you're not getting pieced up by PC players while learning. Run the window peek and cone jump until you hit them clean without thinking.
Then do freebuild drills in your own creative island:
1. Spam 90s for 2 minutes straight (focus on crosshair placement, not speed)
2. Run protected side jumps for 2 minutes (wall + ramp + side jump to new layer)
3. Practice tunneling for 2 minutes (floor + cone + wall while moving forward)
Do this 10-minute warmup before every session. After two weeks of consistent drills, you'll notice the muscle memory kicking in during real fights.
Console vs PC: The Real Tradeoffs
Controller players have stronger aim assist at close range with SMGs and shotguns—use that. KBM players have faster edits and easier flick shots at range. On Oninoshima specifically, the vertical mobility items (Oni Mask, Kinetic Blade) actually favor controller since you don't need to aim while repositioning.
The players who beat you aren't winning because of input device. They're winning because they've drilled these mechanics 500 more times than you have. Put in the creative hours and the gap closes fast.
